A Sip of Mindfulness
*Please note that tea sits are postponed due to the pandemic. Please check back for updates on when in-person gatherings will resume. Thank you!
The Gathering
A Sip of Mindfulness is a weekly gathering through which group members will learn practical techniques in a supportive and peaceful environment to help decrease anxiety and depressed mood through the practice of drinking tea.
The Philosophy
Tea has been woven into the fabric of human ritual for centuries. In this modern age, we are witnessing a resurgence of this practice, both as a social activity and as a method of healing. As our society continues to make leaps in technological advances, our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical systems become overwhelmed in trying to keep the pace. Young people –as well as adults!– continue to enter my practice with deep concerns about their identity, career and relationships as a result of this overload, many of which manifest as symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Symptoms of anxiety and depression include but are not limited to:
- Irritability
- Sad or depressed mood
- Difficulty concentrating
- Difficulty sleeping
- Racing thoughts
- Impaired performance at work or school
- Overthinking
- Increased heart rate
- Headaches
- Loss of interest/pleasure in activities you once enjoyed
A Sip of Mindfulness aims to decrease these symptoms through the continued practice of mindfulness techniques which include but are not limited to:
- Grounding
- Meditation
- Gratitude
- Self awareness
- Living in the present moment
Tea
I am excited to offer a different tea each week, served hot! Please check here for a monthly menu.
Session Structure
Each session will last about 60-90 minutes depending on the curriculum and the number of people in attendance. Group topics will vary week to week, but the general structure will be as follows:
- Check-in
- Guided meditation
- Guided tea serving
- Silent reflection and journaling
- Check-out
Attendance to the first session (October 19, 2018) is highly encouraged as it will introduce mindfulness concepts to group members. Introductory sessions will be scheduled every few weeks for new attendees.
Please note that these gatherings are psychotherapy groups, not tea ceremonies. Although I encourage taking pleasure in drinking tea, the primary goals of this group are to target psychological symptoms. The tea ceremonies that have garnered much popularity in recent years are sacred practices in Asian cultures that have been passed down from elders or those who are experienced in serving tea in this manner. Please check with local temples for classes or public ceremonies.
